The Forced Marriage Unit (FMU) — government support for those at risk of forced marriage
REVIEWED BY: Sean McNamara on 2026-08-27
What this service is
The Forced Marriage Unit (FMU) is the government unit leading on forced marriage policy and casework. It offers confidential advice and assistance to anyone at risk of being forced into marriage — including help if you are already abroad and don't want to be married or returned to the UK. This is distinct from an arranged marriage, which both adults consent to.
Contact (verified from gov.uk)
- FMU helpline: 020 7008 0151 (Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm)
- Out of hours: 020 7008 5000 (FCDO switchboard)
- Email: fmu@fcdo.gov.uk
- If you're abroad and in danger, contact the nearest British embassy/consulate
What protection exists
- Forced Marriage Protection Orders (FMPOs) — a court order protecting someone at risk of being forced into marriage (or already forced); breaching one is a criminal offence
- Police, local authorities and the courts can all act to protect
- The Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Act 2007 underpins FMPOs; applying to court for an FMPO is free
How this fits your family court case
Forced-marriage concerns are taken seriously by the family courts and by Cafcass — safeguarding is their first duty. Emergency: 999; for domestic abuse support see the Refuge helpline 0808 2000 247. Use a safe device when researching.
